SEND is a new and exciting Academy aimed at adults (16+) with mild to moderate learning difficulties. SEND Academy is specifically designed for adults who have left college (age 23+) and looking to further their skills. SEND is an activity day which takes place in the heart of Barry and Tonteg. In recent years there has been a shift towards encouraging adults to access work and volunteer placements. Therefore, this Academy focuses on maths, written communication and independent living activities, enabling service users to gain the skills needed, to help towards this transition.
At SEND you will continue your studies in English and maths- which is important to help you progress in the wider community. You will also take part in a variety of activities every week and these include: independent living skills, work life projects, healthy living and cooking projects, film studies (with free popcorn) and educational quizzes and games.
Service users who access SEND may already have volunteer/work placements in place, and SEND is there to support these individuals from the transition phase at college into independent living within the community. SEND is a great place to meet like-minded individuals, where you can socialise in a relaxed and fun environment.
WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAYING
Demi, student at SEND Academy
“I am 19, I went to Ystrad Mynach College and Coleg Cymoedd. I love SEND because it’s so much fun. I’ve met lots of friends here and love the work we do. I missed college terribly, but SEND Academy is similar to College and I get to come here permanently. I also come twice a week”
Ethan, student at SEND Academy
“I am 21 and I have just finished College at Coleg Cymoedd. I like coming to SEND because the teachers give me work that I like to do. My old friends from College come here too and I have met new friends! I come for two days per week in Tonteg and Trehafod.”
